Quilting and Shopping from Podunk Pretties

This past week flew by, and here it is Monday with very little quilty progress to share. But I assure you, I was busy .... just not nearly as busy in the sewing room as I had planned. Apparently, the rest of life didn’t get the memo that I had quilting to do.

My week started with a plan to quilt the Moody Blues quilt, just a little each day, and have it off the frame by today. Well… that plan didn’t exactly go as expected. I did manage to quilt the top border and half of the first ...

Four Projects Moving Forward from Podunk Pretties

My quilty mojo is running at full speed and there seems to be no signs of stopping.  Maybe it has something to do with the lunar eclipse we had this week....HAHA!  This is going to be quicky blog post.  Let's start with what took up most of my time this week .... processing scraps into the scrap saver system.

Remember the yellow scrap bin from last week? After sorting through it, I cut nearly 150 circles for the Yo - Yo coverlet and somehow managed to turn the edges under on quite a few of them.

My #1 goal for ...

Tricky Pieced Inset Blocks from Podunk Pretties

I put the pedal to the metal this week and finished all of the remaining alternate blocks for my Cake Stand quilt.

To make it go even faster, I broke one of my self-imposed rules: all seams must be pinned. That’s right ... I only used one pin at the end! All of the fabrics in these blocks are low volume prints, so if the seams don’t line up, it won’t be that noticeable.

There are one or two seams in each block that are slightly off, and I think they’re hard to see… well, at least ...

Nothing New~ More Yo - Yo's And 16 Patches from Podunk Pretties

Well I finished all the blue Yo - Yo's.  It wasn't planned, it just happened.

107 of them in one week is pretty good progress.  I'm not sure how the yellow and green ones snuck into the mix.  I don't remember cutting them, but obviously I did.

This week the plan is to start making more yellow Yo - Yo's.   I also need to start digging around for a new storage container.  I'm pretty sure I have a larger clear tote hiding the spare bedroom closet.

Late Sunday evening I finally found the time to press ...

Canning And Quilting Update from Podunk Pretties

About every three days our small garden will produce enough ripe vegetables for a day of canning.  Twice in the last week I've spent nearly the whole day processing yellow squash, zucchini and salsa.  You may be wondering why I'm canning squash and zukes, it's for making dog food.

I've also made two half gallon jars of refrigerator bread and butter pickles for my son and a friend. The pickles are good for 3-6 months in the fridge.  I also canned 7 pints of these pickles to see how well they hold up.  I'm not ...

Cake Stand Quilt Blocks Finished ~ Starting 16 Patch Quilt Blocks from Podunk Pretties

Hello, quilty friends! Come on in and join me in a happy dance because I’ve officially finished all 169 Cake Stand blocks! Yippee!

Of course, there were a few mishaps along the way.

If I caught the mistakes before the block was sewn together, I fixed them immediately. I might go back and repair the ones I missed later, I think there was only two from last week.

During my downtime, I also managed to make a few more yo-yos for my coverlet.

In a recent post, a reader asked about my layout plans for the yo-yos. I’ve ...

...More Cake Stand Blocks from Podunk Pretties

A few more blocks, not as many as I hoped, but some is better than none. Each one of these little blocks made me smile as I stitched them together ... so many memories in each fabric.

The ones with piecing errors gave me a much needed chuckle.  I may fix them and I many not.  This quilt when finished is going to be busy.  A couple mistakes scattered about are like Easter Eggs, hard to find.  They would add a little character and whimsy.

44 more blocks to go.  It would be nice to get them finished this week and ...

Progress....Cake Stand Blocks ~ Yo - Yo"s ~ Scraps from Podunk Pretties

Hi Quilty Friends! I’m popping in with a short and sweet update. As you can see below, I’ve officially finished the Cake Stand blocks I was working on last week.

To complete this quilt, I need a total of 169 Cake Stand blocks.

I have only 54 blocks left to complete, and once those are finished, I’ll be ready to move on to the alternate blocks.

Yesterday afternoon, I finished turning under the edges of all the circles for my Yo-Yo coverlet.

I’ve also finished processing the leftover scraps and have them neatly tucked away in ...

Jumping From This to That from Podunk Pretties

Last week's goal was to finish 34 Cake Stand quilt blocks by Monday, two days ago.  I'm two days late posting and still have not finished them.  I knew when setting the goal that it was going to be a tough one to accomplish but challenges are fun, right?  I also had a veggie garden to weed, harvest and preserve.  Along with the normal summer chores, housework, errands and Mr. Podunk was having an out patient surgery on his foot.  We'll talk more about his foot later.  To prepare for his surgery I needed something to do ...

Playtime! Cake Stand Quilt Blocks from Podunk Pretties

In the last few weeks there's been a lot of digging through scrap fabrics out here in Podunk.  All that digging stirred up the need to sew up something...... and it's all cut and ready to go!  Remember these tiny Cake Stand blocks?

They have been hanging out on the cutting table since January, waiting patiently for me to come out and play.  You can see them tucked away in the corner of the image below.  There's another reason for showing them in THIS picture...the scrap drawer.  I got a wild hair last week to once ...

Design Wall Monday ~ 5 Inch Cake Stand Blocks from Podunk Pretties

The weekend began with an ambitious goal of tackling 20 blocks. Clearly, that didn’t happen, but hey, no stress, there’s only so much cake one girl can handle!

Sewing these 5-inch Cake Stand blocks is just as tricky as you'd imagine.  There's barely any wiggle room for mistakes or sneaky fixes. Once the quilt is done, those little uh-oh's will probably vanish like crumbs from a cake!

One of the small annoyances I'm embracing in the quilt is the clash of prints I think don't mix well. Case in point, the bottom right ...

A Few Cake Stand Blocks from Podunk Pretties

Well as you can see my plan to lay this project away for a few days didn't last. You all understand, right?  After all the hard work of cutting and organizing how could I not piece together a few of the blocks.  So, Friday night I loaded up a design board of Cake Stand Blocks to be sewn.

Then a board of 16 patches.

And then I just kept making more in my spare time all weekend long.  Sigh...I love them.
As I sat back looking at the design wall on Sunday evening, I began to think about ...

Sorting Units For 169 Small Scrappy Quilt Blocks from Podunk Pretties

Making big scrappy quilts from small blocks can be challenging and it's easy to get discouraged or get tired of the processes.  I think that is perfectly normal and it's a good idea to take breaks and work on other things when feeling overwhelmed.  This quilt project was set aside for almost 4 months, and it may get pushed aside a few more times before completed.

Everything you will see in today's post took three days to complete, working an hour or two at a time.  Taking breaks to rest he mind and body, plus I do ...
